Is the Hype Surounding the New Rolex Sea-Dweller Justified?

It is truly amazing what Rolex has achieved over the years with timepieces designed for science, mountain climbing, racing, yachting, diving, and even deep-sea diving.  This is not to mention the enhancements made to their ever-more-accurate caliber and advanced designs such as the day-date.  However, the Sea-Dweller is probably one of the most impressive achievements of Rolex history.  Creating a timepiece that can sustain accurate time keeping in the most treacherous and deepest waters on earth is a massive achievement.

Displayed above is the side angle of the new Rolex Sea-Dweller with its Helium escape valve which allows the timepiece to become waterproof to an outrageous 4,000 feet.

This new reference 126603 was released at Baselworld 2019 with tremendous fanfare because it is the first time Rolex has brought 18 ct yellow gold to the Sea-Dweller line-up.  Utilizing this finest of metals allows the new Sea-Dweller to finally achieve the beauty and elegance that other Rolex models have enjoyed for decades.

The black dial has the inscription "Sea-Dweller" in yellow, mirroring the gold touches on the bezel, winding crown and on the center links of the bracelet.  Previous models had a red Sea-Dweller.  Certainly the golden lettering ties the coloring of the rest of the dial together.

Each of the hour markers contain large luminescent dots, dashes and the 12 o'clock triangle for visibility.  The outside of the hour markers are surrounded in 18 ct yellow gold and inside there is a long-lasting luminescent coloring which glows blue in darkness.  The luminescence is extended to the hour, minute and second hands and to the unidirectional rotatable bezel at the 0 or starting second position.  The besel has a 60 minuet graduated insert in recessed numerals and graduations.

The case is an impressive 43 mm Rolex Oyster designed case.  It has a new caliber 3235 which comes with a Superlative Chronometer certification - guaranteeing accuracy within 2 seconds per day for 5 years.  The resistance to magnetic forces, Paraflex shock absorbers and Parachrom hairspring provide reliability in difficult situations such as deep sea diving.  Yet, Rolex has improved this timepiece's power reserve to approx. 70 hours - a significant increase from earlier models.

The Rolesor gold case and bracelet are matched by a satin finish 904L Oystersteel.  The bracelet has a Oysterlock folding clasp for safety and the Rolex Glidelock extension system - a patented and highly useful system for adjusting the bracelet for divers - outside or inside the wetsuit.

I do believe there is worthwhile fanfare to the hype surrounding the new Rolex Sea-Dweller.  The combination of the Rolesor coloring (Gold and Oystersteel) along with the black bezel and dial provide a perfect combination and a look that can please both men and women in nearly any sporting or elegant situation.

Lydia Ko and her Rolex Yacht-Master 37

Lydia Ko wearing a Rolex Yacht-Master 37

Lydia Ko is an impressive South Korean born, New Zealander golfer.  She has racked up some incredible wins even at a very young age.  She held the top spot as the best amateur golfer for 130 weeks straight and was the youngest person to ever win an LPGA Tour event.  She is the youngest golfer to ever be ranked number 1 in professional golf.  She took home the ANA Inspiration and The Evian Championship trophies.

By the age of only 20 years old, she was ranked within the world top 10 and amassed a total of 15 LPGA Tour events, and 11 notable other events around the world.  To compare what she did versus the great Tiger Woods, her feat is far more impressive.  Although Tiger found success early in his career, he never had the kind of success that Ko has had by the age of 20.

Ko has also come in 2nd in the Women's PGA Championship, 3rd in the Women's U.S. Open and in the Women's British Open.  She has even won a silver in the Rio Olympics.

Ko does not overpower the course.  And from 150 yards in she is a force to be reckoned with.

Rolex Yacht-Master 37
The Rolex Yacht-Master 37 is one of my favorite Rolex timepieces from a stylish and beauty standpoint.  The black flexible Oysterflex band, compliments the black dial and rotatable black bezel.  Although the picture above shows a yellow gold case, the Reference 268655 is actually Everose gold.  The luminescent coated hour markers and hour/minute/second hands are surrounded by matching Everose gold.

The Yacht-Master 37is powered by a caliber 2236 with a 55 hour power reserve.  It is certified by the COSC and Rolex certification to be a Superlative Chronometer.  This timepiece is also waterproof to 330 feet.  It's flexibility and stylish appearance can allow it to be worn anywhere - from the fanciest dress-up occasions to relaxing on the beach.  The high-performance elastomer in the bracelet give the timepiece a comfortable feel in any circumstances.

Tim Henman Reveals his Science of Rolex

Top British Tennis Star Tim Henman
Tim Henman was the world's best British tennis player between 1999 and 2005 and was a grass court master.  He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon 4 times and the quarterfinals 4 times.  Although he never won a grand slam, he has won 15 tournaments - 4 of them in doubles.  He achieved a ranking in the top 10 of all of men's tennis 5 times - with 6th rank his highest achievement.

Over the years he improved on both clay, carpet and hard surface.  He was Britain's best hope to reclaim the Wimbledon's prize for the years he was active - handing the torch to fellow Brit Andy Murray.  Henman has exemplified sportsmanship on and off the court and has amassed a purse of winnings in excess of $11 million.  He continues to compete in ATP tournaments today.
Rolex Milgauss
Henman was inspired to play tennis when he saw Rolex sponsoring a Wimbledon tournament where Bjorn Borg exemplified his tennis dominance.  Henman dons the scientific Rolex Milgauss - a unique timepiece for a unique tennis talent.  The Milgauss is notably stylish with orange lightning bolt seconds hand and orange hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock.

The green sapphire crystal provides a lime colored twist to the sapphire crystal display - producing light reflections while preserving optimal legibility.  The 3131 caliber movement was designed to ensure exceptional resistance to magnetic fields while preserving high precision and successfully passing the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute tests for reliability.  The Oyster case is made of ferromagnetic alloys to protect the movement from magnetic interference.

The 40 mm timepiece has a 48 hour power reserve and is waterproof to 330 feet.  It comes with a reference number of 116400GV and a standard Oyster 3-piece link bracelet made from Oystersteel.

Le Mans Master Racer Tom Kristensen's Love for Rolex Daytona

Tom Kristensen wearing a Rolex Daytona
Tom Kristensen is a legend in endurance race car driving.  He grew up in a small Danish town.  His father was a race car driver and owned a gas station - passing on the tradition and love for cars to his son.  Kristensen started racing Go-Karts in the 1980's and won many titles.  He eventually graduated to Formula 3 and Touring Car races.  He won a Formula 3 race in Germany and another in Japan in the early 1990's.  In 1999 and 2000 he won the 12 Hours of Sebring race.  He has won Sebring 7 times.

Probably more than any other accolade, Kristensen is known for his exceptional results in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.  He was called in 1997 four days before the race to join the Le Mans team Joest Racing.  He helped them win the race.  This was his first Le Mans victory.

Although the following two years he was unable to finish the race, he returned in 2000 with a vengeance.  Not only did he win the Le Mans in 2000, but he continued to win for 6 straight years.  He is one of only 3 racers in history to have won the Le Mans 3 times in a row, and he did it twice back to back.

He won Le Mans again in 2008 and 2013 and came in 3rd 3 times, and 2nd twice.  However, his 9 victories in Le Mans is the best Le Mans record in the world.  His record has earned him the nickname "Mr. Le Mans".

Rolex Daytona
It's no surprise that Kristensen chose the Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona as his timepiece of choice.  This timepiece is born to race - introduced in 1963 and designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers.  Rolex has been tied to racing since the 1910's and has been tied to Daytona, and Formula 1 for decades.

This 904L steel chronograph is designed to perfection.  The dial has detailed markings allowing drivers the ability to estimate speed from 60 to 400 units per hour.  It works equally well in miles or kilometers per hour.  Early models would only go to 200, but the Daytona evolved to support speeds up to 400 mph/kpm.  The pushers on the right side above and below the screw down crown give the drive the ability to accurately time laps.  One press starts, stops or resets the chronograph to perfection.

Recently the Daytona has undergone a full redesign - now equipped with the caliber 4130 - the reliability of this classic driver's tool has become even better.  The power reserve has been extended to 72 hours - up from 50 only a few years ago.  The pushers and crown screw down to provide waterproofness to 100 meters.

Kristensen chose the reference 116500LN which utilizes a black dial with its three inner dials utilizing a combination of white and black for easy legibility.  The 40 mm Oyster case is connected to an Oystersteel bracelet with an Easylink comfort extension link bracelet.  The Chromalight display on the dial provides long-lasting blue luminescence.  The new Chronograph Daytona is also a Superlative Chronometer - achieving COSC and Rolex certifications in exceptional timekeeping.

Ski Champion Lara Gut-Behrami Finds Gold Again

Lara Gut-Behrami with her Gold Rolex Daytona

Lara Gut-Behrami is one of the most decorated women skiers in the world with first place finishes in the Giant, Super-G, Downhill and Combined tournaments.  She has reached the podium (top 3 finish) 47 times and has achieved 1st place 24 times.  She was ranked #1 in the world in 2016 and has been ranked in the top 15 in the world since 2009.

Her determination showed in 2010 when she sat out the entire season due to a significant hip injury, only to rise to 1st in the world in 2016.  She won a bronze medal in the 2014 Olympics.

Lara is fluent in Italian, German, French, English , and also knows Spanish.  She is born in Sorengo, Switzerland.  In July 2018 she married the Swiss soccer star Valon Behrami.
Gold Rolex Daytona
The Rolex Daytona reference 116505 is made from 18 ct Everose gold from case to bracelet.  The 40 mm case has a fixed bezel engraved with the tachymetric scale.  The functions of the timepiece come with a small seconds dial at 6 o'clock, a 30 minute counter at 3 o'clock and a 12 hour counter at 9 o'clock.  The hour markers have 8 baguette cut diamonds and 3 original dimonds at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock.

The new caliber 4130 caliber has a power reserve of 72 hours.  The triplock waterproofness system and sapphire crystal provide a waterproofness depth of 330 feet.  The pushers on the side of the timepiece provide excellent speed setting for the downhill racer.  The timepiece is designed to provide resistance to shocks and temperature variations - both key requirements for a skier of Gut-Behrami's skill.

The thing i love about this timepiece is the way the champaigne dial and inner dials continue the pink gold look of the rest of the watch.  Although this is one of the finest pieces of jewelry, it is also a tool that can perform at the level that Lara Gut-Behrami can appreciate.

Classical Pianist Superstar Yuja Wang's Rolex Datejust 31

Classical Pianist Yuja Wang wearing Rolex Datejust 31m
Yuja Wang is world renouned classical pianist.  She was born in Beijing and has been playing since she turned 6.  She has performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, and many others.

She has released 4 classical CD's, a video and has led stunning performances around the world.  She is known for her versatility - capturing the essence of melody with the technical prowess of powerful and complicated pieces.  She has accomplished both with ease and grace.

Her beauty also enhances the performance - often adorned by stunning gowns and outfits.  But make no mistake, Wang is not just a pretty face.  She has stepped in for some of the most accomplished pianists in the world -- including Radu Lupu and Martha Argerich.  Her performances and stage presence have left crowds in awe and thundering with applause the world over.
Rolex Oyster Day Date with Diamond Studded hour markers
Yuja Wang's Rolex Oyster Day Date is an exquisite timepiece made from 18 ct white gold.  The stunning blue dial is adorned with diamond hour markers with the exception at 12 o'clock where the Rolex crown sits, and at 3 o'clock where there is a date aperture.  The cyclops lens gives the date easy viewability.

Just like Wang's stellar playing, the Rolex attention to detail is 2nd to none. The gold is ade with only the purest metals and meticulously inspected in an in-house laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment.  The Day Date is equipped with a 2236 movement which is a new generation of mechanical movement.  It is fitted with a Syloxi hairspring which is 10 times more precise than traditional hairsprings even in the face of shocks.  This silicon based hairspring is also insensitive to magnetic fields.

The timepiece has a power reserve of 55 hours and is waterproof to 330 feet.  It has a President 3 piece bracelet also made from 18 ct gold.  The bezel is fluted rather than set with diamonds - giving it a more powerful look and ubiquitous function.  This timepiece will not only look spectacular with a gown but also in a pair of bluejeans.  The diamonds are hand selected, but are not off-putting to the observer.  The 18 ct gold is stunning and provides a polished look and yet can be mistakenly viewed as steel.

Tiger Woods' Love Affair with the Rolex Deepsea

Legend of Golf Tiger Woods wearing a Rolex Deepsea Oyster Perpetual Timepiece
Tiger Woods is considered by many as the greatest golfer of all time.  Certainly in the modern era, Woods stands alone as golf's dominant force, with 80 PGA tour victories, 40 European Tour victories and owns the record for total number of weeks ranked No. 1 - a massive 683 weeks in the top spot.

Among his most notable wins, he has won the Masters Tournament 4 times, the U.S. Open 3 times, the Open Championship 3 times and the PGA Championship 4 times.  He is the only player to have won all 4 major championships in a row between 2000 and 2001.  Woods has brought with him thundering crowds of fans to any tournament he enters.  He has injected a much needed spark into golf - increasing its popularity worldwide - largely due to his tremendous fame and winning smile.

In recent years, Woods has suffered back surgery and pain, but roared back in 2018 to a 26th in the world ranking, while picking up his 80th PGA Tour victory at the Tour Championship.  He also came in second at the PGA Championship and 6th at the Open Championship.  Although he is only 4 major wins away from tying the "Golden Bear" Jack Nicklaus, he still seems to have plenty of golf left in him to achieve that feat in his lifetime.

Woods is a very powerful golfer - known for hitting very long drives.  His powerful set of physical skills is matched by a cool levelheadedness and the ability to lock into the zone.  His focus, tenacity and fierce competitiveness is something feared and admired.  He has forced many courses to attempt to "Tiger-proof" their course (making the course longer) in order to increase competitiveness and keeping other golfer's to being relegated to fighting for 2nd place.  Tiger has been proven to raise the level of play of golfers that play with him.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Deepsea of the Sea-Dweller series
Woods is a California native and loves to scuba dive, spearfish and play in the water with his kids.  The Rolex Deepsea is a natural fit for his active lifestyle.  Tiger loves the Deepsea because of its masculine strength.  The black dial and bezel and 904L steel case and band give this timepiece a strength to withstand anything Tiger can throw at it.

The Deepsea is powered by the caliber 3235 and can withstand a diving depth of 12,800 feet.  It has a triplock triple waterproofness system and a helium escape valve to help reduce pressure whenever approaching significant diving depths.  The timepiece has a 60 minute graduated unidirectional rotatable bezel with numerals coated in platinum.  The crystal is 5.5 mm thick scratch-resistant sapphire.  The timepiece is built with high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers and a Paramagnetic Parachrom hairspring oscillator to keep it functioning even when being banged around.  The power reserve is a significant 70 hours.

The biggest feature about this timepiece is the diving depth support.  Yet it has all of the features of a great Rolex timepiece.  It has a date aperture and a large winding crown.  The white luminescent hour markers and hour and minute hands provide exceptional visibility during any activity.  Even the bezel has a luminescent dot at the 0 minute position.  The glidelock extension system lets divers adjust the timepiece and wear it on top of a wetsuit as easily as under the cufflink of a business suit.
