Young Thug Wears a Custom Rolex in GQ Editorial Shoot

Young Thug is an interesting character study in terms of hip hop and fashion. The ATL rapper has gained popularity over the past few years, collaborating with TI and Kanye West, among other hip hop greats. He has also been called a 'rap hippie' because of his styling choices - throwing on a girl's dress over skinny jeans in some instances.

In the profile of the rapper that appeared in the February issue of GQ magazine, Young Thug is characterized as both violent and stoic, brilliant yet unintelligible. This dichotomy may explain why people are fascinated by his music. If art is a mirror for society, then Young Thug is showing us that growing up in the projects of south Atlanta indelibly affects the way you approach the world.

Instead of using fame and success as a vehicle to move away from the street, the hip hop star seems to want to take the street with him on his climb to the top. Unlike rappers like Jay Z, who seem well adjusted to the finer things in life, Thug still seems to cling onto the volatility and language of the street. Perhaps this is what makes people gravitate toward him, even though they may not understand a word he is saying in any of his songs.

In the above photo from his GQ shoot, Young Thug layers a Bally jacket over a floral shirt by All Saints and a tank by Saturdays NYC. He wears an Apple watch on his right wrist and a custom Rolex on his left wrist, making an interesting statement about whether or not smartwatch sales will have a negative effect on the mechanical watch industry.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Explorer

After decades of gaining expertise on how the Rolex Oyster Perpetual model performed under extreme conditions (including scaling the Himalayas) Rolex released the first in a series of wristwatch models built specifically for such endeavors. The Explorer model was originally released in 1953 with new features including the Twinlock winding crown that is designed as a failsafe to keep water out of the case.

In 2010, Rolex upgraded the iconic timepiece from a 36mm case to a 39mm case. It features a smooth bezel, black dial and the Explorer's unique hour hand design with a 3132 self winding mechanical movement equipped with Rolex's parachrom blue hairspring and Parallax shock absorber. Made with Rolex's 904L steel and featuring the oyster bracelet, this is one of the most simple and sturdy models available.

The Explorer is classic and elegant, with smooth, clean lines and a very clear display. Although many other Rolex models provide additional features that may excite buyers, this model is ideal for those with an understated but elegant aesthetic.

The suggested retail price for the Explorer (reference # 214270) is 6,200 Swiss Francs or approximately $6,503 US according to current exchange rates.

Rolex Blue Parachrom Hairspring

Finer than a human hair, Rolex's patented blue Parachrom hairspring is manufactured completely in-house. Historically, blue hairsprings are known as the most precise and reserved for the most prestigious timepieces. The watchmaker introduced this hairspring in the 4130 movement of the Cosmograph Daytona in 2000.

The oscillator is composed of a balance wheel and a hairspring. This is the part of a mechanical watch movement that regulates electric current that is delivered to the oscillator from the mainspring through the escapement. The precision of frequency determines the precision of the watch, in this case within one second a day.

Hairsprings are generally composed of ferromagnetic alloys such as iron, nickel, cobalt and chrome, however, these alloys are sensitive to magnetism and shock. Rolex developed the blue Parachrom hairspring buy fusing niobium and zirconium with a precise quantity of oxygen then introduced to obtain this specific alloy. The use of this alloy makes this hairspring up to ten times more accurate than traditional hairsprings.

Rolex has two patents on their blue Parachrom hairspring. One is for the chemical composition of the alloy and the other is for the surface treatment that was developed in 2005 that gives the hairspring its blue color.

Carmen Dell'Orefice in Ad for Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Royal Black

Carmen Dell'Orefice has been a model since before most Americans would consider modeling a profession. Spanning an impressive 70 years, she was posing for the likes of Irving Penn and Richard Avedon in the 1940s, gracing the cover of Vogue at age 16. She was also a muse for Salvador Dali, posing for him as a teenager in New York.

She is the oldest ever working model, having walked in New York Fashion Week in September of 2012, over 60 years after her first vogue cover. "I think America may be growing up and accepting the fact that the bulk of life exists beyond 50," Dell'Orefice told The Today Show at the time.

In 2009, the model was featured in ads for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Royal Black. Styled with tousled gray hair and black gloves in the print ad below, her sophisticated gaze and high cheekbones exude classic elegance.

'Class is Forever' reads the ad copy, a phrase that is true for both the Rolex brand and the timeless beauty of Carmen Dell'Orefice. Still modeling as an octogenarian, she says it keeps her young - and who are we to argue?

Rolex Cellini Date

Taking its name from Italian Renaissance goldsmith and artist Benvenuto Cellini, the Rolex Cellini Date embodies the intellectual sophistication that characterized the mannerism movement that the artist helped define.

This timepiece exudes classic elegance, pictured here in rose gold with a black dial and black alligator leather strap. Unlike other Rolex models, this Cellini is only available in 18 karat Everose or white gold with either a black or silver dial and a shiny leather strap in either brown or black.

Other unique qualities of this model include an analog date display on a sub-dial in the 3 o'clock position and a double bezel that is both domed and fluted. The hour markers are split down the middle by the minutes, making for another interesting design feature.

Much like its namesake, this Rolex model breaks all the rules but still manages to represent the unnaturally elegant aesthetic of Cellini's work.

Jay Z Pairs Rolex Sky-Dweller with Gold Cuban Link Chain

The Wireless Festival is an annual music event that takes place in England over the summer. Jay Z was a headliner in July of 2013, releasing his album Magna Carta Holy Grail that same week.

During his set, the rapper wore an impressive 5 kilo Cuban link chain by Rafaello & Co flanked by an 18 karat gold Celine ID Bracelet on his right wrist and a gold Rolex Sky-Dweller on the left.

Although many would find the styling a bit gaudy, the simplicity of a short sleeved white button down shirt makes the jewelry a focal point. And considering that his lyrical content is full of jewelry references (this Cuban link chain is mentioned in his song BBC) it makes sense that he would wear something this flashy onstage.

It is always interesting to see how stylists pair Rolex watches with other jewelry pieces. The gold Sky-Dweller adds a classic masculine touch to this performance look.

Charlize Theron Wearing Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller

Charlize Theron is known for her Oscar winning talent as an actress and her stunning beauty. Shot here at a Lakers game sitting floor side a few years back, she sports a Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller on her wrist.

There is something sexy about a beautiful woman wearing an oversized watch designed for a man's wrist. Even while wearing a flannel shirt - or boyfriend shirt, as they have come to be known - she exudes sex appeal.

Theron plays up the femininity in her Christian Dior commercials and red carpet gowns, but seems completely comfortable blurring the gender lines with her more casual looks. As they do with menswear, Rolex watches seem to up the ante for any look in terms of style and elegance.

It certainly doesn't hurt that this particular timepiece is on the wrist of one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, but the juxtaposition between the masculinity of the DeepSea and Charlize's smooth, glowing skin is a sight to behold.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

Globalization has made traveling for business a must for many executives and professionals. As the name suggests, the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is a Rolex for those who spend time in the sky. If you're a frequent flyer, keeping track of time zones on your watch can be frustrating.
Rolex Sky Dweller Black Leather Strap
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller

This beautiful timepiece is designed to remedy that. With a turn of the bezel, you can set your watch to two different time zones without stopping the watch. This allows you to tell the time in your current time zone while keeping your watch set to the time zone you came from. It also adjusts the date between months with 30 and 31 days, meaning you only have to adjust the date once a year on March 1.

Shown here in 18 karat white gold with a black leather strap and ivory dial, this wristwatch is built to go anywhere and go with anything. Golfer Adam Scott is featured in Rolex's ads for this model.

Styled with a classic blue sport coat and black slacks, the Sky-Dweller completes the look with an effortless elegance that is difficult to achieve with any other accessory. Though the 24 hour ring on the dial may not be aesthetically pleasing to everyone, it certainly gives the watch a distinctive look among other luxury wristwatches.

The watch features Rolex's 9001 movement, a self-winding movement developed by Rolex in 2012. This certified Swiss chronometer passed Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) testing.

The suggested retail price for the Sky-Dweller configuration above (reference # 326139) is 37,700 Swiss Francs, or approximately $39,544 US according to the current exchange rate.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona

Introduced in 1963 to meet the needs of race car drivers, this timepiece features a bezel with a tachymetric scale, allowing drivers to measure their speed up to 400 miles or kilometers per hour.

This is a versatile and elegant wristwatch for anyone with a need for speed. As global partner of Formula 1, Rolex still honors their traditional ties to motor sports. In the 1950s, they began their relationship with Daytona International Speedway, which became the inspiration for the Cosmograph Daytona. Rolex is now the official timepiece of the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

With a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal that is water resistant up to 100 meters, this high precision personal timing tool can go sailing on the open water with you, too.

Style and function are not mutually exclusive when you own a Rolex, as the Daytona model demonstrates. The suggested retail price for the Daytona configuration shown above (reference # 116506) is 71,500 Swiss Francs, approximately $74,997 US.
