Hodinkee Offers a Glimpse Inside the Greenroom of the 89th Oscars

89th Oscars Greenroom Sponsored by Rolex (photo: Rolex/Line 8 Photography)
The 89th Academy Awards will take place in the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood Highland Center in Los Angeles on Sunday. Rolex sponsors the Greenroom for the event and Hodinkee posted a few photos of the 100 square meter space. This area is where Oscar winners and presenters go before or after they hit the stage during the show and the watchmaker created a chic environment for them to gather in.

In a four day buildout, their Geneva-based design team spared no expense to offer the celebrities at the event an oasis that includes natural and luxury elements. Photographs of trees line the walls behind the bar with plush grey carpets on the floor. The fabrics used for the upholstery are chartreuse and grey-turquoise colored with modern metallic accents and a Venetian glass chandelier hangs from the ceiling. Photos of hollywood legends - some wearing Rolex watches - line the shelves with wall clocks and screens to watch the show.

Visit Hodinkee to check out photos of the space and rolex.com for more information about the partnership with the Academy Awards.

Every Rolex Tells a Story: James Cameron's Submariner

Every Rolex Tells a Story: James Cameron (photo: Rolex)
While the world knows James Cameron as the Oscar winning director of blockbusters like Titanic and Avatar, the filmmaker and Rolex Testimonee also has a passion for exploration that is expressed in the watchmaker's latest addition to their Every Rolex Tells a Story series.

In one of the most interesting entries to date, Cameron shares the story of a stainless steel Submariner that he wore during the filming of Terminator 2 through is Oscar acceptance speech for Titanic. After making the film Avatar, he felt the calling to become an activist for the rights of indigenous people around the world. His efforts took him to the Amazon where he encountered the Kayapo tribe.

His interactions with the chief of the tribe, Ropni, resulted in a relationship that changed both of their lives. Visit rolex.com to find out how his prized Submariner plays into this story. You can also watch a short video on the film career of the prolific director, released just in time to commemorate Rolex's partnership with the 89th Academy Awards.

Every Rolex Tells a Story: Garbiñe Muguruza

Every Rolex Tells a Story: Garibeñe Muguruza (photo: Rolex)
Current French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza will not be advancing to the Australian Open semifinal after a loss to American Coco Vandeweghe this week. However, the Venezuelan-born Spanish tennis star has much to be proud of in her career. In 2014, after defeating Serena Williams in the fourth round of the Australian Open, she decided to honor the milestone with the purchase of a Rolex watch.

"Since I was a kid, my father and my mother both had a Rolex and I always wanted to have one as well. But my father always told me, 'You have to earn it, you have to work hard and one day you will have the chance to buy one yourself.' At the end of that year I felt that that moment had finally come, that it was a great reward for what I achieved," says Muguruza on her Every Rolex Tells a Story page at rolex.com.

The athlete chose a 36 millimeter Datejust with diamond hour markers and a pink dial, worn in the photo above. The size of the case looks perfect on her wrist, though some enthusiasts may shudder at the thought of calling a 36 millimeter timepiece a women's watch. The timing couldn't have been better for Rolex to add this story to their website, with the Australian Open and demonstrations from women's groups around the world occurring simultaneously last weekend. The Swiss Watchmaking Industry Reports a Softening in Decline

Rolex Chêne-Bourg Site (photo: Jean-Daniel Meyer)
According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH, the decline of exports for the Swiss watch industry softened from October to November of 2016. While exports of precious metal configurations saw a decline, stainless steel models offset the loss with a small increase. Watches priced over 3,000 and between 200 and 500 Swiss francs saw the most significant decline, with wristwatches at other export prices showing a small increase.

Sales rose in mainland China and the United Kingdom, with Hong Kong remaining stable. The rest of Europe and the United States saw declines, however, bringing exports down. These numbers are seen as somewhat positive according to the Swiss watch industry, as the months prior showed a steady decline in imports overall. Whether the steadying of exports will signal an end to the decline remains to be seen. With watchmakers buying back inventory this year to offset their declining sales, it seems that they have their work cut out for them in the first quarter of 2017.

Rolex is not a public company, so their sales figures and production numbers remain shrouded in mystery. However, these numbers make it clear that the Swiss watchmakers need to create a significant amount of fanfare at Baselworld 2017 in the hopes of changing the negative trend in watch exports in the coming year. It would be wise to focus on the segments that are currently trending upward, so I don't expect as many precious metal configurations as interesting stainless steel models. Rolex is known to focus on their long-term goals as compared to other companies that tend to go with current trends. This will make it interesting to see how they position themselves at the trade show in March.

Rolex Wristwatch First to Receive Kew Certification in 1914

Letter From the British Horological Institute to Rolex on the Subject of the Record Kew Certificate
Before 1914, the Kew Observatory in Great Britain had never granted a "Class A" certification to a wristwatch. These certifications were generally given to large marine chronometers that went through rigorous testing until Rolex submitted a wristwatch to prove that they could be just as precise. On July 15, 1914 they proved the skeptics wrong by submitting a small watch that looked like the one photographed below and making it the first wristwatch to ever receive Kew Certification. With this accomplishment, Rolex began manufacturing more certified chronometers than any other watchmaker in the industry at the time.

A Rolex Watch Comparable to the First Class A Chronometer (photo: Rolex)
The testing took place over 45 days and included testing the precision of the tiny wristwatch in five different positions. It was also submitted to extreme temperatures, ice-cold and burning-hot, and also ambient temperature. The stringent testing was necessary because the precision of the marine chronometers of the time was necessary to ensure the safety of the ships that depended on their accuracy. The Rolex watch submitted for testing was precise up to +1 second.

Kew Chronometer Results (photo: Rolex)
Rolex continued to manufacture certified chronometers while it developed other advances in watchmaking. By 1926, they introduced the Oyster case, a waterproof case that is still in use today on most Rolex models. In 1931 they introduced the self-winding Perpetual rotor that is also still used today to power most automatic mechanical watches. After 1951, when it became compulsory for all watches to pass certification, the watchmaker made sure all of its movements received particularly good results through 1971, when those citations were no longer issued. Since then, Rolex has come up with its own Superlative Chronometer Certification.

Watch Plácido Domingo Discuss His Work With Rolex and Operalia

A Rolex Arts Testimonee since 1982, the incomparable singer, conductor and opera administrator Plácido Domingo has used his influence in the world of opera and relationship with the watchmaker to give young artists around the world the opportunity to sing on the greatest staged of the world with his Operalia voice competition. Fostering young talent and creating a bridge between the undiscovered talent of the world, the competition has introduced the world to artists like Joyce DiDonato, Eric Owens, Rolando Villazón, Erwin Schrott, Joseph Calleja, Isabelle Bayrakdarian, and many more.

The opera legend speaks of being proud of his relationship with Rolex in the video above, discussing the reach of his work with the watchmaker. He mentions their support of Operalia and of opera houses around the world, like La Scala and The Met. Below, he discusses the twenty year anniversary of the singing competition and its effect on the world of opera at an international level. He emphasizes the importance of opening doors to talented voices in places like China and Sri Lanka, connecting them to the people who can help them elevate their careers.

"My purpose in Operalia is to help identify not only the best voices, but also to discover those singers whose personalities, characters and powers of interpretation show that they have the potential to become complete artists. Individuals such as these become tomorrow’s stars," says Domingo of the competition. Check out the promotional video for Operalia on their official website to learn more about the competition. Limited Edition Rolex Daytona Designed by Lenny Kravitz

A renaissance man with an eye for mid-century modern design, Lenny Kravitz has spent the past decade building his design resume with Kravitz Design, Inc. His main focus has been on interiors and furniture, but the musician recently collaborated with Les Artesans de Genève on a modified Rolex Daytona that exudes rock and roll appeal. They took a 116523 reference Daytona and added design elements made from leather and gold while still maintaining the iconic look of the Cosmograph Daytona model.

After two years of development, the Kravitz Design LK 01 is available in limited quantities for 41,380 Swiss francs and comes in a black case with a bluetooth speaker built in. The modifications include a Barenia calf leather strap, a handmade golden bakelite bezel that preserves the tachymetric scale of the original and a dial modified by hand. 22 carat gold features were added, including a gold rotor added to the movement, a staple of Les Artisans de Genève, that can be seen through the clear case back, another modification. The case is treated with a black diamond-like carbon coating, allowing the case to blend in with the dial and straps for a monochromatic look that makes the red and gold details pop.

Kravitz takes natural glam to a new level with his foray into wristwatch design. Similar to his interior design concepts, this timepiece brings a vintage seventies style to the modern blacked out wristwatch trend for a truly unique watch. As a watch collector, Kravitz's eye is well trained and he is clearly a proponent of modifications, something many watch enthusiasts rail against. A combination of creativity and hand craftsmanship brings the LK 01 to a higher echelon than other modified timepieces, transcending the trend and cementing it to the legacy of the talented rock star and designer. For more information about this timepiece, visit the official website of Les Artesans de Genève.

Yoncheva received rave reviews for her role as Violetta in Verdi's 'La Traviata' in 2015. "She is the finest Violetta since Maria Callas. The Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva is possibly the best Traviata in the world at present,” said Die Welt of the performance. In 2014, she stepped in as Mimi in 'La Boheme' at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, after having played Gilda in 'Rigoletto' there. She has also graced the most important stages of Europe, as Musetta in La Bohéme at the Royal Opera House in London and Lucia de Lammermoor at the Opéra National de Paris in 2013.

A student of music since her childhood in Bulgaria, Yoncheva received degrees in piano and voice in her home country, studying under Nelly Koitcheva. She later obtained a mater's in voice at the Conservatory of Geneva under the tutelage of Danielle Borst. After receiving her formal training, the opera singer applied her vocal talent to singing competitions. Most notably, she won top prize and the special CultureArte prize at Operalia in 2010. The Rolex Institute Presents Codex: Ashes and Snow

Gregory Colbert is a Canadian artist whose photographic, filmic and literary work focuses on moments of contact between man and the animal kingdom. In 2002, he presented a show at the Venice Arsenal entitled Ashes and Snow. The largest solo exhibition ever mounted in Italy, it caught the eye of the chairman of Rolex at the time, who purchased pieces and encouraged the artist to take his show around the world.

Codex: Ashes and Snow by Gregory Colbert (photo: Gregory Colbert Facebook)
The photographic portion of the exhibit features sepia and umber toned photos Colbert shot in various locations around the world. Documenting his years traveling to places like India, Egypt, Burma, Borneo and Namibia, the original photographs show interactions between man and beast. None of the shots are digitally superimposed, meaning that the boy reading a book in front of an elephant in the photo above is actually sitting in front of the elephant. For the exhibition, the photos were printed on handmade Japanese paper, giving them a natural look and feel.

The literary component consists of 365 letters from a man to his wife over a yearlong journey. The title, Ashes and Snow, is revealed in the final letter and the photos and films are tied into the narrative. In addition to the photos and letters, the exhibition features films that contain poetic narratives that tie in the themes of endless connection between humans and the natural world. "When I started Ashes and Snow in 1992, I set out to explore the relationship between man and animals from the inside out. In discovering the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals, I am working towards restoring the common ground that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals," Colbert said about the project.

After the success of the original exhibition, Colbert decided to take the show to the world, enlisting the help of Colombian architect Simón Velez to create the Nomadic Museum. A sustainable structure made using shipping containers and bamboo, the 55,219 square foot structure featured 2 galleries and 3 theaters that could be assembled and broken down in different cities across the globe. It traveled the Atlantic for shows in New York City, Los Angeles and Mexico City, then crossed the Pacific for an exhibition in Tokyo for millions of people to experience.

The Rolex Institute has immortalized the show on their website entitled Codex: Ashes and Snow. They present the images from the show in the style of an ancient codex for those who have not been able to experience the Nomadic Museum in person. Villazón's singing career got its start in a very interesting way. He was discovered by baritone Arturo Nieto, who heard him singing in the shower in his Mexico City apartment. His connection to Domingo has continued throughout his career. In 2007 he recorded an album of zarzuelas conducted by Domingo. His career was sidelined after 2007 due to a cyst in his vocal cords. He underwent surgery in 2009 and returned to the stage in 2010 as Nemorino in L'elisir d'amore at the Vienna State Opera. After that, he performed a series of recitals and later began performing Mozart tenor roles, releasing an album of Mozart concert arias in 2014.

What Rolex Model do Rappers Wear?

In any profession, buying a luxury timepiece is a symbol of status and achievement. The rap game is no different, with most of the top hip hop artists sporting the ultimate status symbol: a gold Rolex. While different rappers choose different models, there are a few configurations that are more popular amongst the superstars of the musical genre.

Jay Z has an extensive luxury watch collection, switching it up from the gold Rolex Sky-Dweller he was wearing above in 2013 to the new Rolex Daytona 116500LN he was spotted wearing with wife Beyonce during the NBA finals. Another rapper with a Sky-Dweller in his collection is Meek Mill, who was gifted the diamond-encrusted custom Sky-Dweller by Nicki Minaj for his birthday earlier this year. Minaj took photos wearing a custom Datejust at Meek's birthday celebration. She has also been shot wearing a yellow gold Day-Date.

Wiz Khalifa Wearing a Custom Yellow Gold Rolex (photo: scoremoreshows.com)
The Day-Date and Datejust models are popular amongst rap giants like Wiz Khalifa, Eminem, Young Thug and Tory Lanez. Young Thug was photographed for GQ wearing a custom Rolex earlier this year and Lanez wore a yellow gold President Rolex for his performance of 'Say It' on Jimmy Kimmel Live last January. Wiz Khalifa has worn a vintage yellow gold Rolex Day-Date in photo shoots for GQ and his Instagram feed. Eminem made headlines years ago for wondering if he could afford a Rolex after he achieved success as a rapper. It turned out he could and was photographed wearing a Datejust for the cover of Rolling Stone.

While there isn't one particular Rolex model that appeals to all rappers, most of the rappers I have profiled on this blog seem to prefer yellow gold Day-Date or Datejust models with President bracelets. There are those who prefer custom versions with diamonds and purists like Jay Z, who seems to prefer wearing the newest Rolex models direct from the manufacturer in their original configurations.

Japanese Architect Kengo Kuma Designs Rolex Office Building in Dallas, Texas

In addition to his job designing Japan's National Stadium for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Kengo Kuma has also been hired to design the new Rolex Sales and Service center in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas tower features an environmentally sophisticated design that incorporates natural light and historic Japanese architecture.

“The theme of the design is the integration of the land with the building," Kuma told Rolex. "Usually, office buildings are independent monuments, and the building is separate from the land around it. So I thought of starting with the landscape by connecting the building to the ground with a low Japanese castle wall, and twisted the building to show the continuous movement from terrain to building, from the bottom to the top – the dynamic form of the building.”

In-Between Spaces of Rolex Office Building in Dallas (design: Kengo Kuma)
The corners of the seven story building are on a slant, giving the building the look of a slightly twisted deck of cards. The in-between spaces of the building are blur the lines of inside and outside, controlling the climate in the hotter months of the year. The edges of each floor are designed to house gardens and greenery in an effort of incorporate nature in the design. The interiors are lined with wood, creating an interesting and unique architectural feature.

Salzburg's baroque city center, a Unesco World Heritage site and the birthplace of Mozart, hosts the event that has featured performances by Plácido Domingo, Francesco Meli and Cecilia Bartoli. Bartoli is currently the artistic director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, which takes place in the spring. She will also be taking on the role of Maria in a new production of West Side Story at the 2016 summer festival.

The Trapp Family Singers performed at the festival in 1936. The performance is recreated in the filmic adaptation of the broadway musical based on Austria's von Trapp family, The Sound of Music. In the film, the performance takes place in 1938, a historical inaccuracy that was surely devised to heighten the film's drama.

Rolex has been the main sponsor of the Salzburg Festival since 2012. For more information on the 2016 festival, including the sold out production of West Side Story, visit the festival's official site.

Aside from her roles in the world's greatest opera houses, she is also known as a recital singer. She has achieved great success with her recordings of baroque music. In addition to her career as a singer, she also works as artistic director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival.

In August of 2016, Bartoli will star as Maria in an opera version of West Side Story at the Salzburg Festival, sponsored by Rolex. All of the performances are sold out, a good sign for the new interpretation of the 1950s broadway musical. Cecilia Bartoli has been a Rolex Testimonee since 1996. The video embedded below shows the opera phenom singing "Riedi al soglio" from Zelmira at Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza, Italy in June of 1998. For more information on Bartoli, visit ceciliabartolionline.com.
