Rolex Bronze Explorer II Concept

The image above is a bronze Explorer II that I put together to express my desire for a new and bold Explorer configuration. Since they currently don't offer Explorer models in any material other than stainless steel, I figure it wouldn't hurt to introduce a bronze version. Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000

I put together a post with my 2017 Rolex model update predictions that focuses on their past behavior in terms of model updates. The most likely prediction is a 50th anniversary model update for the Sea-Dweller 4000. There are a couple other models with anniversaries and I also list other factors that may influence the watchmaker's model updates, like sizes and materials.

Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet

One of the innovations that I feel will most likely be introduced on new model configurations is the Oysterflex bracelet shown in the photo above. With the popularity of rubber straps for Rolex watches, it makes perfect sense for the watchmaker to capitalize off the trend by offer more rubber strap models in addition to the Everose gold Yacht-Master that is currently offered with the Oysterflex.

Blacked Out Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 Concept

Another concept that I chose to bring to life is a blacked out Sea-Dweller 4000. Although this would be a big move for the watchmaker, who usually maintains a classical aesthetic on their wristwatch models, I feel that it is entirely in their wheelhouse considering that they already use a PVD coating on their Tudor Heritage Black Bay Dark. It may be pie in the sky, but it doesn't hurt to dream.

When it comes to making predictions, I find that it is more important to express my desire than try to be dead on. We lose nothing by letting the watchmaker know which models we love, which we think could use an upgrade and what we want our Rolex watches to look like in the future.

Regardless of what we see at Baselworld 2017, I hope that their model updates combine the precision and innovation Rolex is known for with an emboldened aesthetic that incorporates some of the aspects of their Tudor brand that we have come to love. The only question left for me to ask going into the new year is: what would you like to see from Rolex in 2017?

Horology geeks tend to turn their noses up at modified watches, but companies like Titan Black continue to find success with those willing to spend their money on timepieces that are truly one of a kind. The watches in their Titan Black Collection, like the Rolex Explorer Oro shown above, are all sold in limited quantities. They are also the only luxury watch customization company to offer modifications on any watch, not just watches from their collection. They also offer concierge services to watch collectors, helping their clients source rare and hard to find vintage pieces

The Explorer (Reference # 214270) is one of the simplest models in Rolex's professional line. The legibility and symmetry of its dial make it easy to tell time on it. The large arabic numbers at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock are unmistakable and its otherwise clean design makes it an excellent candidate for a modification. The Oro customization from Titan Black moves the watch away from the basic stainless steel and black configuration most commonly seen on Rolex sports models. With gold on the hands, hour markers, logo and model name and their DLC coating on the case, bezel and bracelet, this watch takes on a life of its own. However, the combination of black and gold isn't at all jarring or flashy, as one may expect when imagining a modified watch.

Most of the watches in their range are blacked out as one would expect, with some exceptions. The Lathbridge watches from their collaboration with designer Patrick Cox, like the Daytona shown in the photo below from the Titan Black Instagram feed, feature a cognac colored coating. The color is a bit more earthy and warm than yellow gold, but not as pink as rose gold. The polish is subtle and allows the timepiece to avoid being considered flashy or gaudy. In addition to working with Patrick Cox, the company has also created special edition Cartier, Richard Mille and Audemars Piguet timepieces.

Customization may be considered a dirty word in the world of Rolex, but Titan Black's work offers an adventurous take on classic timepieces that is worth a look. Their pieces may not fit into everyone's collections, but they are designed to make the person wearing it feel unique and distinguished. Black-Out Rolex GMT-Master II BLNR by Project X (photo: Project X)

The 'Black-Out' effect is achieved by applying a military grade 'Diamond-Like Carbon' coating to the timepiece with the company's logo engraved on the case back. The timepieces they have in stock are purchased directly from the watchmaker and while the original warranty from Rolex is no longer valid due to the customization, Project X offers their own warranty to customers.

Blacked out watches are not for everyone, but the BLNR looks particularly bad ass in black. It certainly lives up to the name 'Batman' in this case. This Black-Out model retails for $16,872 USD and is available for immediate delivery through the Project X website, www.projectxdesigns.com.

M. Shinoda X BWD Daytona (photo: BWD)

The blacked out Rolex Daytona shown in the photo above is a collaboration between BWD and Mike Shinoda from the multi-platinum selling band Linkin Park. It features a military grade titanium coating with a skull designed by Shinoda on the dial just below 12 o'clock. This model is available only through the Bamford Watch Department and is priced at £19,000, or approximately $27,528 US according to current exchange rates.

While some on Rolex forums posit that these bespoke watches are no longer covered under Rolex's warranty, it should be noted that according to Bamford's FAQ, all of their timepieces are covered by a 2 year warranty provided by BWD. They offer several customizable design options on a range of luxury watches through their website at bamfordwatchdepartment.com. You can also see some of their work on their Instagram account.
