Rolex Z-Blue Milgauss

Capable of withstanding a magnetic field of up to 1,000 Gauss, the Rolex Milgauss (mille is the French word for 1,000, Gauss a unit of measurement of a magnetic field) was introduced in 1956 to meet the needs of professionals in the scientific and medical fields who are exposed to magnetism at their work sites.

Monochrome offers a history of the Milgauss model on their blog, noting that the electric blue dial of the current model is coated with Zirconium, giving it an iridescent aqua-blue look. The contrast between the electric blue dial and the orange lightning bolt shaped second hand gives this version a vibrant look. 

The current Rolex Milgauss model features a 40mm case, a 3131 movement with patented anti-magnetic technology, blue parachrom hairspring, 904L stainless steal case and Oyster bracelet. This Superlative Chronometer also features a Chromalight display. The suggested retail price for the 116400 GV configuration shown above is 7800 Swiss Francs, or $8,181 US. 

In the photo below model Sean O'Pry shows off the Z-Blue Milgauss in an ad for Americana Manhasset, a high end shopping center in New York. It doesn't look like he has to be too concerned about magnetic fields affecting the timepiece at the beach, but the ad does provide a youthful take on the scientific instrument.

Noah Mills Wears a Rolex in Man of the World Editorial

In issue No. 15 of Man of the World magazine, Noah Mills is photographed by fashion photographer Guy Aroch wearing a platinum Rolex Datejust. The model is styled by Allan Kennedy in his photographic interpretation of the life of a gigolo.

In the photo above from the editorial entitled 'Love Me Tender' Mills wears a jean shirt under a gray suit with the sleeves rolled up just enough to let the Rolex peek out. The lighting and exposed brick outside the window combined with the rolled up sleeves give this photograph a late seventies, early eighties look.

Man of the World is a quarterly publication started in 2012 by Alan Maleh. The men's magazine features content ranging from style and travel to art and culture. Their online store features a nice selection of timepieces, including several Rolexes for those who enjoy vintage watch shopping.

Young Thug Wears a Custom Rolex in GQ Editorial Shoot

Young Thug is an interesting character study in terms of hip hop and fashion. The ATL rapper has gained popularity over the past few years, collaborating with TI and Kanye West, among other hip hop greats. He has also been called a 'rap hippie' because of his styling choices - throwing on a girl's dress over skinny jeans in some instances.

In the profile of the rapper that appeared in the February issue of GQ magazine, Young Thug is characterized as both violent and stoic, brilliant yet unintelligible. This dichotomy may explain why people are fascinated by his music. If art is a mirror for society, then Young Thug is showing us that growing up in the projects of south Atlanta indelibly affects the way you approach the world.

Instead of using fame and success as a vehicle to move away from the street, the hip hop star seems to want to take the street with him on his climb to the top. Unlike rappers like Jay Z, who seem well adjusted to the finer things in life, Thug still seems to cling onto the volatility and language of the street. Perhaps this is what makes people gravitate toward him, even though they may not understand a word he is saying in any of his songs.

In the above photo from his GQ shoot, Young Thug layers a Bally jacket over a floral shirt by All Saints and a tank by Saturdays NYC. He wears an Apple watch on his right wrist and a custom Rolex on his left wrist, making an interesting statement about whether or not smartwatch sales will have a negative effect on the mechanical watch industry.

Rob's Rolex Journey

Since coming up with the brand name in 1908, Hans Wilsdorf inextricably tied Rolex to luxury, precision and style. A Rolex wristwatch is more than a status symbol or a timepiece. With over a hundred years of history and current annual production at about a million watches, the company has withstood the test of time and remains a pioneer in the production of almost indestructible timepieces with unmatched attention to detail.

One of my earliest childhood memories is of trying on my grandfather's Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona 116518 when I was five years old. It was yellow gold with a white dial and a brown leather strap. It dangled on my small wrist and felt heavier than I thought it would - I was accustomed to the Mickey Mouse wristwatch my mom bought me at Disney World that year, which was much lighter.

My grandfather was an avid deep sea diver and fisherman and he was rarely seen without his Rolex on his wrist. He left me that watch in his will a few years ago, and I wore it proudly for years. I liked having a piece of him with me and was also fascinated by wearing a watch that was close to my age that still looked great and functioned well.

For my fortieth birthday, I decided to purchase my own Rolex and preserve my grandfather's for when my young son would be old enough to inherit it.

It was the search for my own Rolex that became the genesis for this blog. With so many options and styles to choose from, I spent a lot of time diving into the rich history of Rolex to decide which model best suited my lifestyle.

As a creative executive based in South Florida, I spend a lot of my time with clients and colleagues, but I also like to get out on the water as much as possible. Whether I'm taking the family out to the sandbar on a Saturday or kite surfing on the beach in the early mornings before heading to the office, I need a watch that can handle my active lifestyle, but still look good with a Tom Ford suit for one of the many black tie events I have to attend throughout the year.

After much consideration and hours spent in Rolex forums, I went with the Rolex DeepSea Sea-Dweller with the black dial, black ceramic bezel and oyster bracelet. It is certainly a departure from the yellow gold Daytona with the brown leather strap in terms of style, but the DeepSea gives me all that I want in a watch - it is rough and tumble but still elegant. I feel comfortable transitioning the stainless steel watch from diving and boating to getting dressed and going out.

Although the search for my own Rolex is over, I am left with an appreciation and passion for the Rolex brand that I intend to explore using this blog. My particular areas of interest include the history of Rolex, vintage advertisements, Rolex models, design, functionality, fashion, style and accessories.
